Dr Anup Basu
Multimedia
Dr
Basu has received an ICE grant of $100,000 per
year cash from Castle Rock Research, alongside
iCORE's $100,000 per year cash investment for a
period of five years. Related work on
acquisition, transmission and visualization of
high-resolution medical imaging has received
funding of $500,000 cash from Alberta Innovation
and Science, along with additional industrial
and medical partner funding. In addition to
cash, substantial in-kind contributions will be
made to the project by various partners and the
University of Alberta.
Research Program
Overview Dr Basu is focused on
developing perceptually optimized multimedia
educational content for delivery over
heterogeneous and wireless networks. Developing
web based educational support tools and products
that are compatible with wireless devices,
allows Dr Basu to leverage the ICT community
being fostered in Alberta. This merger of ICT
and education also creates a niche space in
Alberta.s economy and simultaneously enriches
future Albertans.
Dr Basu.s work will
impact online learning and testing facilities
such as multi-user interactions, promoting group
and cooperative learning, rather than the
traditional single user online educational
interfaces, taking on research challenges such
as varying delays for different users in a
networked environment, because of variations in
bandwidth and latency, connecting technology,
industry and education for future Albertans. An
adaptive multimedia learning and testing
environment will allow students to learn and
evaluate their progress .anytime and anywhere,.
and have some fun in the process too, rather
than the stressful fixed time pen-and-paper
tests of today
Biographical
Information Dr Basu has worked on
various aspects of online multimedia with
special emphasis on human perception and has
developed leadership in industrial research over
the last decade by leading several
industry-university projects as well as
assisting in the formation of start-up
companies. His work has been recognized by
Hewlett-Packard, and resulted in awarding of the
only funding of a multimedia educational
curriculum in Canada, to the University of
Alberta.
